To understand the difference between them we must first address how the melanin production works.

Melanin is made by something called melanocytes. You can think of them as tiny factories inside our skin that produce melanin.

As you can see in the illustration above the melanocyte is smoothly producing a normal amount of melanin.

Once a melanin pigment is produced, it naturally goes toward the skin surface layer.

Which makes the skin keep its natural color.

That’s what a healthy melanin production looks like for darker skin.

Now let’s take a look at the illustration below.

The first thing you will notice is that compared to healthy melanin production, the skin becomes darker at the surface, right?

Well, that’s because the melanocyte produced too much melanin into the skin which causes the melanin to pile up at the surface and ultimately results in darkness.

It's much like a factory that's gone into overdrive. When that happens, things get messy and everything starts to build up.

But why does melanin get overproduced in the first place?

Good question.

It's because the melanocyte isn't working the way it should, causing overproduction to occur, which ultimately creates those dark circles.
